When a new year rolls around, many people say they're going to take the time write up a new budget. It's a time with new finances and new opportunities, yet many people don't take advantage of this time. It can be very beneficial for you to take the time to look over your credit report for errors or charges that don't make sense, and can actually be done at any time of the year.

As you look over your credit report, you may want to pay special attention to the following subjects:

• If you anticipate making a large purchase with one of your credit cards, you might want to request a credit-line increase now, so you know the credit is available when you're ready to buy.
• If most of your credit is from individual retailers, perhaps it is time to apply for a major credit card that you could use just about anywhere.
• If all of your accounts are joint or cosigned, maybe this is the year to strike out on your own, and apply for a card in your name only.
• Conversely, if you have too much available credit, this might be a good time to reduce it, either by closing unused accounts or by asking your creditors to reduce your credit limits.
• If your report reveals scattered late payments--one here, one there--you could make this the year in which every bill gets paid on time.
• If you've accumulated a lot of inquiries, you might decide to avoid situations in which unnecessary credit checks are run on you: only apply for credit after you're sure you want it and generally be selective about granting your permission for a credit check.
